Springfield Interchange Project Photo - October 2006 |
The following photo shows the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project construction.
This photo was taken on October 26, 2006, by the Virginia Department of Transportation, and is posted here with their permission. Roads to the Future utilized Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition to sharpen and brighten the photo.
Aerial photo of the Springfield Interchange Project, taken Oct 26, 2006, looking northeast, showing the Springfield interchange where I-95, I-395 and I-495 junction. The unfinished bridge in the left of the photo is anticipated to open by early December and will take Beltway Outer Loop, I-495 eastbound traffic (from Tysons Corner) south onto I-95 (towards Richmond). The new bridge will allow motorists access to the I-95 southbound mainline roadway, without any more weaving and merging with direct access onto I-95 southbound. This bridge will be a major safety improvement making the final separation between traffic exiting at VA-644 Old Keene Mill Road/Franconia Road and motorists heading south towards Richmond.
The 3-lane northbound flyover ramp from I-95 northbound to the Beltway Inner Loop (toward Tysons Corner), which opened on August 24, 2006, is visible in the center and center-left of the photo, as the wide ramp that curves to the left.
The long elevated bridges curving rightward in the right of the photo, are the two flyover bridges that connect the I-95 through traffic movements between the Capital Beltway (I-95/I-495) and Shirley Highway (I-95).
The under construction red-colored bridge (due
to the red primer paint on the bridge's steel girders) is part of the ramp from
the Beltway Outer Loop to northbound I-395. That ramp already exists, exiting
from the left lane of the Beltway Outer Loop. The part constructed in the SIIP
is a relocated portion that will exit from the right lane of the Outer Loop, passing
over I-395, and passing under the Outer Loop, and then seamlessly joining the
pre-existing ramp.
